Programmes & Schemes

DIETs are expected to become models for other educational institutions in the districts in terms of meticulous, efficient and effective planning and execution of functions, harmonious and creative organizational climate, maintenance of a clean and attractive campus, etc. DIETs are the nodal institutions for improving quality of elementary education in the district. Every DIET has to perform three types of functions as envisaged in the Programme of Action (NPE 1986). They are:- i) training and orientation, ii) academic and resource support and iii) Action research & experimentation.

In order to activate the DIET to discharge the above mentioned functions, physical facilities (such as building, etc.) instructional materials, aids and equipments, competent and qualified teacher educators, autonomy, training to the personnel and financial grants are provided to DIETs by the Government of India through the State Government.

To carry out its various roles, there are seven (7) branches, each carrying out their own areas of work. Likewise, in DIET-Thadlaskein as well, seven branches have been placed and these are:

Programmes & Scheme Conducted by DIET Thadlaskein:

1. Regular two years pre-service teacher training programme:

DIET Thadlaskein has been conducting two years Diploma course for elementary teachers since the academic session 2001. The curriculum for the Diploma course has been developed and provided by the Directorate of Educational Research and Training.

2. Short term training programmes under centrally sponsored schemes:

Besides the regular two years pre-service programme, DIET Thadlaskein has organized a number of short term training programmes, workshops, development of teaching learning materials and other SSA programmes. It has conducted various programmes for the Heads of schools, In-service Teachers, BRPs, CRPs, Pre-Primary Teachers, etc. DIET Thadlaskein has also conducted training programmes under SSA- where in-service elementary teachers as well as newly recruited teachers have been trained in previous years.

3. Other Programmes (Field interactions, extension programmes, research, development of materials, etc.):

DIETs are to maintain the closest possible contact with the field to identify practical problems being faced up in the field and to devise ways of tackling them, to obtain information about worth-while experiences and to provide academic guidance and resource support to the field. Extension programmes include dissemination of all information and knowledge, relating to New Policy decisions, initiatives, interventions, etc. for effective implementations among educational workers, teachers, villagers, etc. or any other matters of professional interests to the teachers. DIET Thadlaskein is also involved in research and survey works in the district.

4. Co-Curricular Activities:

Every year, a variety of co-curricular activities are organized for the student teachers. So, in spite of the busy academic schedule through out the year, the lecturers and the teacher trainees are also engaged in various activities where they can showcase their talents and also have a good time at it.

World Environment Day

The Work Experience Branch of DIET Thadlaskein,Jowai, took the initiative to celebrate ‘Environment Day’ on 5 th June 2017 in the DIET premises. World environment day was celebrated with full enthusiasm where all the faculty and staff members of the institute took part on this day including the students.

Students and faculty members were allotted their duties. The programme was inaugurated by the Principal Shri. R .V. Khonglah and Smt. E. Laloo Sr.Lecturer. The  day began at 10am, started with assembly and reading of a Cleanliness Pledge. The cleaning began from10:30 am -1:30pm. After the cleaning was done Roll call of the students was taken, where principal gave a speech in which he highlighted the need for conservation of the environment. The day was a huge success.

Independence Day

The District Institute of Education and Training, Thadlaskein celebrated 71 st Independence Day on Tuesday, 15th August 2017 at its premises with full enthusiasm. The principal Shri. R. V. Khonglah was the chief guest of the programme and was accompanied by Smt. E. Laloo where she hoisted the national flag. The national  anthem was sung by the students and the faculty present on that occasion. The principal then gave a short speech on Independence Day and reminded the students that freedom was very important and it was necessary to preserve it. Smt. E. Laloo also spoke on the significance of the historic day and also advice the students to  become ideal citizens of the country.

Field Trip

Study Tour to Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, Shillong 2017

The Meghalaya Teacher training curriculum at the elementary level has developed a new  curriculum as per the NCFTE guidelines. One of the areas to be covered during the training is the School Internship programme with a weightage of 300 Marks. Under  the domain of School Internship, a visit to any innovative centre like school, teacher training centre and the like is highly recommended. Trainees should get  the opportunity to examine these centres on how they work out. They will be also highly motivated by the innovative ideas of running any institute or on how to  initiate a good work creatively based on their novel ideas. The Curriculum do emphasize on this visit that it should be compulsory covered during Internship. It  furthers envisages that a visit to any innovative centre should be made irrespective of places and regions but inevitably the programme should be fulfilled. Based on this guideline, the DIET Thadlaskein proposed that a trip is to be made for School Internship. As per the NCFTE 2009, School Internship programme is well defined  inclusively with other repertoire of work to be completed. Meghalaya, so far has many Educational Innovative centres which are mostly of Special Education but not  any Inclusive Education or Formal Education. So to familiarize the trainees with these novel ideas, the DIET Thadlaskein proposed to take them to the Don Bosco  Centre for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC), Shillong.

Objectives:

The main objectives of this visit are:

• To complete the part of Internship programme.
• To motivate trainees to innovate ideas for the upliftment of School Education in the State.
• To relate ideas based on regions disparity and enable them to implement those ideas back home.
• To create a healthy competition among trainees.
• To inspire them with good works and positive attitude towards initiating any good work.
• To appreciate one’s own culture as an asset of entity amidst diversity.
• To break the monotony of daily classroom routines.
• To expose them to the different show-cased context of North East India.
• To make decision on the choice of destination for study tours in their respective institutes.

The Study Tour:
The Study Tour was conducted on the 18 th of August, 2017 under the In-service programmes Field interaction, Innovation and Co-ordination (IFIC) Branch.  Altogether, there were 89 members, including the Lecturers. The journey towards the DBCIC started at 8:30 AM, with much enthusiasm from all the participants. Late breakfast was arranged in the DBCIC’s Canteen following which the teacher trainees were led inside the Centre. They were divided into their different internship  groups and were given certain sections/galleries of the DBCIC to lay emphasis on and to reflect upon.

13. Alcoves Gallery

Conclusion
After the study tour, the trainees were advised to write a report. It was found that all of them have benefited from the Tour. It was noticed that there was a  significant improvement in the social skills of the trainees through reflections.

DIET WEEK 2017
The DIET WEEK which is held once a year at the institute is one of the most exciting and anticipated function. The ‘WEEK’ is not only being looked forward by the  teacher trainees but also by the Lecturers and staffs of the institute. They are altogether active participants through the different programmes being organised. The  ‘WEEK’ has been a platform for every teacher trainee to showcase their gifts and talents in every field both outdoors and indoors. It caters to the overall  development of the individual, developing their skills, confidence, creativity, sportsmanship, team-spirit and most importantly embedding in them good values and  virtues. It a time and moment where everyone gets involved and live out the youthful spirit within them, it is a chance and opportunity to come to know each other  better from a different light of perspective. The friendly matches among the teacher trainees and lecturers helped in understanding one another and further built a  closer relationship, this diverted each from the constrained monotonous classroom lectures.
